The nation was rocked by the alleged murder of George Floyd by Police Officer Derek Chauvin on Saturday, May 25, 2020 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Protest, and prayers, have been held throughout the nation in towns big and small, and right here in Freestone County, as well as surrounding counties.

A prayer gathering (at right) was held in Fairfield, Texas Thursday, June 6, 2020 at the Courthouse Square with numerous people in attendance including, Mayor Kenneth Hughes, District Attorney Brian Evans, Sheriff Jeremy Shipley, Fairfield Police Chief David Utsey and many law enforcement officers.

Sheriff Shipley prayed with the crowd, “A Christian heart, a true Christian heart has no place for racism.”

The Pastors present were David Ransom Sr., Frank Freeman, Troy Hendrickson, Richard Heyduck, Jeff Salomon, Carlos Daniels, Robert Smith, Mike Daniels, Jeff Stachmus, Leon Thomas, and Andrew Weitner.

Apostle Ransom prayed for God, “every spirit that causes division, every spirit that causes asunders, every spirit that cause separation, any spirit that’s even in our midst right now, BOW! In the name of Jesus Christ.”

A protest was held in Teague, Texas on Saturday, June 6, 2020 with several people in attendance, praying and showing community love for one another.

Various people attended showing solidarity, including some well known faces such as City Administrator Theresa Bell, Alderman Chris Nickleberry, and Police Chief DeWayne Philpot, to name a few.

City Administrator Theresa Bell announced, “Because in Teague, Texas we’re one community, we don’t see color.”

Teague also plans to hold a prayer Wednesday, June 7, 2020 at Booker T. Washington Park starting at 7:00 p.m.

Corsicana, Texas also hosted a few peaceful protests that were organized in coordination with the Corsicana Police Department and the Navarro County Sheriff’s Department.

The First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States of America protects the right to a peaceful protest.

As we see more protest spreading throughout the nation, keep in mind that they are happening all around us. This includes in cities (Waco, Tyler, Dallas, Houston) that many people from Freestone County might visit for a variety of reasons, including shopping, an outing for the day, visiting family, etc.

While most protests have been peaceful, not all have been.

To keep safe, make sure to be aware of where you are and what is currently happening.

Consider contacting the city ahead of time to see if they are aware of any planned protest.
