Teague voters ousted all three of their incumbents, while one new Fairfield ISD candidate blew away the competition in Saturday’s elections.
Appointed Fairfield Councilman kept his seat against two challengers, and the FISD Bond Election passed by a majority vote.

Here are the preliminary results:

City of Teague

Mayoral challenger David Huffman garnered 206 votes to 157 votes cast for incumbent Mayor James Monks.

Candidate Garlan Steed earned 213 votes against the 141 votes logged for incumbent Alderman Jerry Ballew.

Candidate Lois Ann Mins received 196 votes to beat out incumbent Alderman Marilyn Michaud with 92 votes and challenging candidate Douglas Allen with 70 votes.

City of Fairfield

Incumbent Mayor Kenneth Hughes was unopposed and will retained his title. He received 268 votes.

Candidate James Tyus was unopposed for the Councilman – Place 1 seat. He received 245 votes.

Incumbent Councilman Arland Thill, who was appointed in 2021, beat out two challengers by receiving 211 votes. Conrell J. Lockett, III had 91 votes; and Roger M. Keeton has 43 votes.

Fairfield ISD

Three At-Large positions on the FISD Board of Trustees were up for election.

Candidate Penny Robinson Meredith received the most, with at total of 506 votes.

Joining her will be two incumbents: Kim Whitaker with 378 votes, and O.B. Utley with 374 votes.

Bond Election

The $8 million Bond Election proposed by Fairfield ISD passed with 54.4% of the vote.

Voters cast 506 votes for the bond, and 424 votes against the bond.

The bond will be used as follows:

–$200,000 – FHS Roof Repair

–$5,300,000 – HVAC

–$900,000 – LED Lighting

–$1,200,000 – Transportation (school buses)

Constitution Amendments

Both proposed Texas State Constitutional Amendments were overwhelming passed in Freestone County.

–Proposition 1 received 1,309 votes for, and 193 votes against.

This proposition effectively cuts school district property taxes for homeowners who are 65 and older or disabled.

It passed state-wide with 86.91% of Texans voting “for” the proposition.

–Proposition 2 received 1,246 votes for, and 261 votes against.

This proposition raises the state’s homestead exemption – the dollar amount of a home’s value that is exempt from taxation by school districts – from $25,000 to $40,000.

It passed state-wide with 84.89% of Texans voting “for” the proposition.

One More Election

Early voting in the Primary Run-Off Election will begin Monday, May 16 and end Friday, May 20, 2022. Polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at two locations: the Fairfield Conference Center and Teague City Hall.

On the ballot locally in the Republican Primary will be the position of 87th District Judge. Run-Off will be decided between candidates Amy Thomas Ward of Mexia and Dan Scarborough of Palestine.

Election Day for the Primary Run-Off will be Tuesday, May 24th with polls open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
