Wortham graduating senior, Hagen Proulx, signed to continue his golf career at the college level during a special ceremony on Wednesday, May 2, 2018.
This standout athlete was awarded a scholarship of $22,000 per year, up to four years, from Franklin College in Indiana.
This young man took up the sport just a few years ago. “My dad took me to the golf course on a random Saturday, my freshman year, because we had nothing better to do,” he says.
Hagen was a quick study, as he has qualified for the State tournament, more than once.
Driving and long irons are his strengths, says Hagen.
When asked for tips for beginning golfers, he said, “Give it time. There is always that one good hit that brings you back.”
Hagen plans to pursue a Business degree in Accounting, Finance, or Management.
When asked where he sees himself in the next five years, he replies, “Playing golf at LSU, finishing up my degrees and looking for a job.”
Witnessing last week’s signing were Hagen’s parents, Shannon and Michael Proulx; his mommaw, Alice Price; Grandpa, Ramon Barreda; and nephew, Greyson Proulx. Also congratulating him were Principal David Hayes, Golf Coach and Athletic Director Chad Coker, teachers and fellow students.
He tells upcoming Wortham seniors the following:
“Unlike any other sport out there that you can play professionally, golf is something you can do your whole life,” says Hagen. “The feeling you get when you hit a great shot, is a feeling like nothing before.”
“Don’t be that person who wishes they played golf in high school,” he continues. “Make every second count!”
