Wednesday, Dec 8th was just a normal day in Anatomy and Physiology class at Wortham High School, until around 10:00 a.m.

Wortham High School has started the Wortham Bulldog EMT Academy this year as a new program for students. Little did these students know, they were about to be put to a real-life skills test.

Around 10:00 a.m., a WHS teacher began feeling faint. One of her students offered her a piece of candy. Within minutes the teacher was unresponsive.

One student was sent to get the Principal, and the other EMT Academy students immediately began patient assessment and putting their skills to work.

These students have completed all of the required classwork and are actually about to begin ambulance ride outs and ER clinical rotations in January.

Some students thought this was a scenario skills test, but quickly realized it to be an actual medical emergency.

Before First Responders arrived on scene, the EMT students had the patient on a stretcher, had checked all vitals, blood sugar and administered oxygen to assist her breathing. When First Responders arrived, their job had pretty well been done.
Mexia FD Ambulance arrived shortly, and the patient was transported to Parkview.

“Everyone at WHS is very proud of these young ladies,” states WHS Principal David Hayes. “Very soon they will be helping others in our community as they move into the work force. Several of our EMT students plan on a career in the medical field, and the others will be using it as a stepping stone into a nursing career.

“We are extremely proud of these young ladies for being at the right spot at the right time,” said Principal Hayes.”
