A veterans’ wreath is a symbol of HONOR, RESPECT. And VICTORY. When a volunteer places a wreath on a veteran’s grave on National Wreaths Across America Day, we encourage them to speak that veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice, and reflect on that person and their life. Each live, balsam veteran’s wreath is a gift of respect and appreciation, donated by a private citizen or organization and it is placed on graves by volunteers as a small gesture of gratitude for the freedoms Americans enjoy. Wreaths Across America is committed to teaching younger generations about the value of their freedoms and the importance of honoring those who sacrificed so much to protect those freedoms.

In this video, Miles Worcester, grandson of Wreaths Across America founder Morrill Worcester, teaches the special symbolism behind the live balsam in each Wreaths Across America veterans’ wreath. Watch online at:

For centuries, fresh evergreens have been used as a symbol of honor and have served as a living tribute renewed annually. The forest scent equals purity and simplicity. The red bow symbolizes great sacrifice and the circular shape represents eternity. Wreaths Across America specifically observes 10 characteristics of each veteran as the wreaths are assembled with 10 balsam bouquets. 1) Their BELIEF in a greater good 2) Their LOVE for each other. 3) Their STRENGTH, work ethic, and character. 4) Their HONESTY and integrity. 5) Their HUMILITY, selflessness, and modesty. 6) Their AMBITIONS and aspirations. 7) Their OPTIMISM for America. 8) Their CONCERN for the future. 9) Their PRIDE in their duties. 10) Their HOPES and DREAMS that didn’t always come true; but left them with no regrets.
