Freestone County Retired Teachers held their annual FREE Book Giveaway Saturday, December 4, 2021 during “Christmas on the Square” at the Freestone County Courthouse. Five hundred children’s books of all grade levels and genres were given away to children who came down to the courthouse to see Santa Clause and participate in the fun afternoon of Christmas activities.

FCRTA President, Kim Whitaker, commented that the give away was “fast and furious with so many smiling faces to receive some free books.” Members Terry Dunlap and Janet Race also assisted the children in picking out their books and bagging them up.

It was a great success with the pretty weather and lots of activities going on.  With all our books being given away today for this year we will now start the collection process.

Doris Nealy our past Book Project Chairman, and her committees  organized other book give aways during the year as well as the donation of books and money to Dew ISD after their library fire.

TRTA’s Children’s Book Project collects gently used or new books each year to give away to children across the state of Texas. Our members are asked to donate 10 books or $10.00 each year to supply our book give away.

We are always on the look out for a book deal, like other groups book sales or garage sales that we can pick some nice books up to add to our book numbers. We have participated  each year but the past two years with covid have been hard to get books and hard to disperse them with all the rules.

If anyone would like to donate gently used books or money to buy new books our unit will appreciate it. Contact Alicia Smith via text 903-388-0950 or e-mail als75840@yahoo.com
