“I am very pleased with the guilty verdict and the 35 years handed down by the Court,” says District/County Attorney Brian Evans regarding the conviction of Crystal Thompson during her trial on March 4th – 6th, 2019.
Thompson was convicted of Aggravated Robbery, a First Degree Felony, for a January 10, 2018 incident where, while in the act of committing theft of property, she threatened Akeevah Jackson with imminent bodily injury or death by exhibiting a deadly weapon, namely a BB Pistol.
“This was an egregious crime committed right here in the middle of Fairfield,” explains DA Evans. “Further, the individual had a long history of theft offenses, as well as Assault on a Public Servant.”
With her defense attorney, Shirley Spivey, Thompson appeared before a jury of her peers in the 87th District Court of Judge Patrick Simmons.
Though she gave a plea of ‘Not Guilty,’ the jury determined that DA Evans provided enough evidence to find her guilty of the crime.
Thompson was sentenced to 35 years in custody of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. She will be given Jail Time Credit of 421 days for time spent in the Freestone County Jail.
However, as this is a crime with a deadly weapon finding, Thompson will be required to serve at least half of her sentence before she can be considered eligible for parole.
“I want to thank our local law enforcement, including Fairfield P.D. and the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office, for all of their work to put this case together,” concludes DA Evans. “The response to the incident on that night was quick and led to the successful prosecution of Ms. Thompson.”
