Great job, by the staff and freelancers of the Freestone County Times for bringing home a Third Place win for General Excellence in the 2022 Texas Better Newspaper contest.

The award was based on two entries, one from June 15th that included coverage of the kick-off for Freestone County Fair week, and the other from August 31st that featured the beginning of school and high school football.

Judges in this category liked all the photos on each page, commenting that the newspaper “looks sharp and draws the eye.”

The ‘Times’ also brought home a couple Fourth Place awards for feature photography and sports photography.

These entries included some exciting pictures from freelancers Jennifer Lansford, Payton Botelho, and Ashlyn Garcia, as well as Editor Karen Leidy and Office Manager Natalia V. Marsters.

Well done!

Also named in our corner of the State was the Corsicana Daily Sun, who brought home a Second Place for News Writing and Third Place for Best Magazine; and the Palestine Herald Press, who received Second Place awards for Column Writing and Editorial, and a Third Place for Feature Photography.

The annual Better Newspaper contest is hosted by the Texas Press Association.
