Over 40 members of TRTA District 12 road on a chartered bus to Austin on Wednesday, April 12. They joined over 1,000 other retired teachers as they participated in “Day of the Capitol”. The purpose of this trip was for the retired teachers of Texas to impress the legislators with the need for a Cost-of-Living Adjustment during this legislative session.

A sea of RED filled both of the galleries as many of the legislators in both houses warmly welcomed us to their house and honored us with stories of educators and school employees that made a difference in their lives. With inflation at an all-time high and retirees having a hard time making ends meet, THERE IS A GREAT NEED FOR A COST-OF-LIVING ADJUSTMENT. The only way TRS Retires can receive a cost-of-living adjustment is for the legislators to file bills, vote, and agree with each other to help us. All retirees who retired after 2005 have never had a COLA.

The TRTA Membership window for the upcoming year is going on now. Contact any Freestone County RTA member for information about joining our local and state TRTA. TRTA is the only organization to lobby for retired teachers in Texas. TRTA is working daily to secure a COLA this session and to keep retirees’ healthcare stable.
