With the school year more than half over, teachers and their students continue to focus on academics, as administrations work to keep safety a priority.

Dew ISD

Earlier this month, Dew Elementary competed in UIL Academics and the results are in…Out of 9 schools, they are CHAMPIONS!
Tally is as follows:

–1st place (Dew) – 477.33 points

–2nd place – 372.33 points

–3rd place – 298.66 points

“We are so proud of these students and our teachers for the hard work and dedication put into these contests,” said Dew ISD.

Dew Junior High may be small, but according the their fans, they are mighty!

These students competed against 9 other schools in UIL Academics, taking Second Place by only 60 points.

“We could not be more proud of our little school!”

Because of their small size, most of the Dew Junior High students were able to compete in at least one event, with the majority of those students in at least 3 events or more.

“Our students are already preparing for next year to come home with the Champion title,” said Dew ISD.

Final tally:

–1st place – 704 points

–2nd Place (Dew) – 645 points

–3rd Place – 460.5 points

Congrats to these hard-working students and teachers for their accomplishments.

Fairfield ISD

A survey was conducted earlier this year on weapon detectors being utilized across the Fairfield school district.

“The response from the survey overwhelmingly supported these devices,” said Superintendent Dr. Jason Adams.

A test run was set to begin on Friday, January 20th at the FHS campus, requiring all individuals passing through weapon detectors for entrance into the school building.

Additional security upgrades are also planned across Fairfield ISD, according to Dr. Adams.

“Eventually we will have devices on all four campuses used for building admittance, as well as events (ball games, programs, etc.),” said the Superintendent.

According to Dr. Adams, the District Safety Committee, comprised of school personnel, parents, and law enforcement, will continue to evaluate the security, devices, and logistics across the district and make recommendations for policy and procedure changes.

Wortham ISD

Parents of Wortham ISD students were notified of two safety issues during the month of January.

The first notice dated January 13th involved an incident involving a student allegedly bringing a weapon to the WISD facilities.

Administration immediately launched an investigation and sought assistance from local law enforcement.

Wortham Superintendent Melissa Bosley assured parents, students and staff that the student had been identified and will not be returning to class at any WISD campus before the investigation is complete, and pending any potential prosecution.

“This situation presents no ongoing danger to students or staff currently,” read the notice.

A few days later, in a notice dated January 17th, Superintendent Bosley informed Wortham ISD families that one of their student athletes received a threat of violence.

After consultation with local law enforcement, Wortham ISD and Axtell ISD jointly decided to postpone the JV and Varsity basketball games that was scheduled for that evening, to ensure the safety for students, staff and fans.
