It seems it happened so fast. We went from Winter to Spring even though it is sometimes still very cool outside and even though not all the fields are dried out from the abundance of rain we have had. I was so glad to see some grass coming in and I hope it grows a lot quicker than it has been. We had thought we might have to feed the cows through Spring because the cool temperatures were hampering the grass growth. We are sure as soon as it warms up some more, the grass will grow quickly. The trap and corral pens are filled with grass. Dark green, long stemmed, waves of grass. We had absolutely no problem catching the whole Middle Herd last week because of the picture-perfect grass found there. Some cows had already been standing outside the gates staring inside at the grass. We had them in the North East Pasture for a couple of days and when we drove down to open the gate to let them out and The Colonel gave his special call, some of the cows beat us to the trap. Even the bulls came on the run, big and small bulls, the little calves came right along with their Mommas. Some of them couldn’t even get past where the gates had been because they would stop to eat the first grass they saw. We had Fedora; the little calf we are bottle feeding, locked up in a little pen in the corral because we were afraid she would get stepped on by the others. She seemed to be in light shock at all the cows being in the same area where she was. So, Spring has sprung at the Red Oak Ranch!
