It is just about time for a round up. I love them. Catching cows is not that hard because The Colonel gives his call for them to come up and they usually make a run out of it. So, when the time comes in a week or so, they will come trotting up, cows going to the salt, calves going to their Mommas.

The little ones don’t take much time learning how to keep out of the way of the bigger ones and they keep an eye on them anyway. They will step in and turn a calf out to keep it from getting hurt. We have lots of good Moms in this herd. Sometimes the “Baby Sitter” cow is watching those younger ones even when their own calves are not needing her protection.

I am wondering how the cows know to watch the herd, keep an eye out for one of the calves in that group, and eat their fill with everything else going on. I hope it doesn’t get too cold for the little ones. Actually, their Moms plop them down in the hay to keep warm and the little ones know the routine. It is so cute when the little ones get covered up with hay with only their little heads showing. Living on a ranch is such a pleasure and especially living on the Red Oak Ranch.
