Patrick Todd of Todd Interests set the tone for the 2023 Livestock Show Sale with a winning bid of $34,000 for the Grand Champion Steer (pictured at top), exhibited by Cullen Fryer of Teague FFA. This is $14,000 more than last year’s Grand Champion Steer!
“We are very thankful for his contribution,” said Michelle Welch – County Fair Board Secretary.
According to Welch, after losing several buyers this year, board members and county fair volunteers reached out to several people, including solar farms and oil leasing land men.
She personally reached out to Freestone County’s newest landowner, Shawn Todd, whose company recently purchased the 5,000 acres surrounding Fairfield Lake.
After visiting Fairfield and meeting with board members, ag teachers and others, Todd committed to “spending money on the kids” and sent his son, Patrick, to attend the auction on Saturday.
“The Grand Champion sets the tone for the rest of the sale,” said Welch. “So, it was huge for all the kids.”
The winning bids continued to break records for exhibitors as the Grand Champion Swine, exhibited by Ava Thompson of Fairfield 4-H, sold to Vanna Production, LLC for $16,000.
Grand Champion Sheep, exhibited by Haisley Layne of Freestone Community 4-H, went to Freestone County 4-H Adult Leaders for $7,000.
Freestone County 4-H Adult Leaders then joined with Texas Farm Bureau to purchase the Grand Champion Goat, exhibited by Kenna Coufal of Fairfield 4-H, with a winning bid of $8,000.
The Grand Champion Poultry, exhibited by Wilson Lupo of Fairfield 4-H, sold to Community National Bank & Trust for $4,000.
And, the Grand Champion Rabbits, exhibited by Elizabeth Mathison of Teague FFA, went to Texas Farm Bureau with a winning bid of $5.000.
In total, the Grand Champion animal projects brought in $74,000 – an increase of 42% over last year.
The trend continued with almost every one of the Reserve Champions garnering a higher bid than the 2022 Livestock Show Sale.
Texas Farm Credit put in a winning bid of $20,000 for the Reserve Champion Steer, exhibited by Avery Elizabeth Strait of Fairfield FFA.
The Reserve Champion Swine, exhibited by Jaylin Flowers of Fairfield FFA, sold to R Construction of $15,950.
Reserve Champion Sheep, exhibited by Kenna Coufal of Fairfield 4-H, was a no sale, as this exhibitor also showed the Grand Champion Goat (see above).
