For the last several years the Freestone Quilt Guild has supported Lisa Underhill’s The Train of Hope Elderly Ministries by making a charity quilt for raffle. The guild provides the fabric, piecing and quilting to make the quilt and proceeds from the raffle go to support the ministry. This year, the Guild members learned a new technique/quilt pattern called “One Block Wonder.” The cutting and piecing technique produces hexagon blocks with the same motif from the fabric in each triangle that makes up the hexagon. Member Carolyn Hughes offered to donate her “One Block Wonder” quilt for the charity, and member Cynthia Allen donated the custom quilting. The quilt will be raffled in November 2024. For more information about Lisa’s The Train of Hope Elderly Ministries or for raffle tickets, text 903-519-1778.
The Freestone Quilt Guild is a supportive community of quilters of all skill levels who are passionate about the art of quilting, learning new techniques, teaching and encouraging others. In addition to creating a yearly charity quilt, the Guild supports the community by awarding the Newberry-Satterwhite Memorial Scholarship to a local high school senior every other year. The Guild also hosts outside speakers and workshops; and works on a variety of different projects using quilting techniques taught by individual Guild members throughout each year. Most members elect to arrive several hours before the monthly business meeting to sew together, enjoy fellowship, share tips and see the various beautiful quilt projects created by the members. Over the last few years, the Freestone Quilt Guild has grown an estimated 30%, and now includes members from Freestone, Limestone, Leon, Brazos, Falls, Tarrant, Anderson and Wichita counties. The Guild welcomes visitors and would love to have more new members join!
The Freestone Quilt Guild meets the first Monday of each month at 1:00 pm in the First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall at 201 North Mount St. Fairfield, Texas. For more information, contact Cynthia Allen, (Guild President) at 903-391-3241.
