Death In Hwy 75 Home Under Investigation

Premature reports on social media about the death of a man found in his home on South Highway 75 in Fairfield on Wednesday, September 12, 2018, had area residents in a frenzy, worried about their personal safety.

Both the Fairfield Police Department and Freestone County Sheriff’s Department say they were inundated with telephone calls from citizens concerned for their safety.

According to Fairfield Chief of Police Kenny Bulger, at no time was the public in any danger, nor was there an active ‘man hunt’ stemming from this incident.

Chief Bulger reports that Jonas Powell, a young black male in his mid-twenties, was found deceased with a gunshot wound to the head.

The body has been sent to Dallas for an autopsy.

Chief Bulger states that preliminary autopsy results, which have yet to be received, will determine if they will be investigating the incident as a homicide or suicide.

Leading the investigation is Fairfield Police Officer Rodney Price, with the assistance of the District Attorney’s Office and Texas Rangers.

Update:  Official Autopsy report has ruled this death as a suicide.
