The Benefit RC Poker Run is continuing to make a significant impact on volunteer fire departments across the Richland-Chambers Lake area, funding critical equipment, training and facility improvements.

Proceeds from the annual fundraiser have helped departments enhance emergency response capabilities, improve firefighter safety and plan for long-term needs.

At Southern Oaks Volunteer Fire Department, 2025 funds were used to purchase a Zoll advanced cardiac monitor, now deployed on most medical calls. The department also added battery-powered scene lighting and installed exhaust ventilation systems in its station to improve working conditions.

Officials said 2026 funds will help build and outfit a new grass truck to replace a nearly 25-year-old unit, with additional funds reserved for apparatus repairs.

Mildred Volunteer Fire Department reported ongoing improvements supported by Poker Run funding, including new structural firefighting gear, a portable pump for drafting water from Richland-Chambers Lake and updated breathing apparatus.

The department has also added a second brush truck, upgraded vehicle components and recently placed a rescue and dive boat into service. Funding has also supported a quick-response all-terrain vehicle and routine maintenance.

Kerens Volunteer Fire Department has used funds to build a small grass truck and purchase personal protective equipment, hoses and maintenance supplies. This year, the department plans to direct funds toward upgrading breathing apparatus.

The Eureka Volunteer Fire Department detailed investments made since 2018, including generators, scene lighting and equipment for a new Ford F-450 grass truck. Additional funding has supported vehicle repairs, radios, fire hoses, bunker gear, firefighter training and a station expansion.

In 2025, the department purchased six sets of bunker gear and plans to replace a tanker pump and add wildland gear in 2026. Ongoing needs include protective gear, lighting and battery-powered rescue tools.

At 287 Richland-Chambers Fire & Rescue, officials said the fundraiser has helped shift the department from reactive to proactive operations.

Over the past three years, funds have supported the addition of a new brush truck, 1,500 feet of fire hose and three automated external defibrillators. The department also expanded its facility to house equipment and improve firefighter accommodations.

Future priorities include replacing an aging rescue boat, adding a utility terrain vehicle for off-road response and updating bunker gear.

Officials noted that while the funding allows for long-term planning, unexpected maintenance costs remain a challenge.

Across departments, leaders say the Benefit RC Poker Run plays a vital role in ensuring volunteer firefighters have the tools and resources needed to protect their communities.
