A Fairfield ISD school bus traveling on FM 488, near County Road 232, just outside of Fairfield on the stormy Monday morning of March 25, 2024, hydroplaned and crashed into an electrical pole, severely damaging the front end of the bus.

Twenty-six students were on board bus #8 when the accident occurred at approximately 7:50 a.m.

A bystander at the scene states that the bus driver’s leg was pinned and that they were taken to the hospital by ambulance for a possible injury; and students escaped with a few minor bumps, bruises, and busted lips.

According to FISD Superintendent Joe Craig, all students were checked by first responders with no major injuries reported. Students were transported to their respective schools by another school bus where parents or guardians were allowed to pick them up.

“We are incredibly grateful that no students were seriously injured,” said Craig. “The safety of all students and employees remains our priority.”

The wreck had traffic backed up for a while as first responders cleared the scene in the rain.

The downed power line caused power outages throughout Fairfield for a few hours, but crews worked quickly to restore the issue.

Superintendent Craig said that DPS is leading the official investigation of the wreck.
