Once again, ‘No Action’ was taken by Freestone County Commissioners regarding the issue of salary for jailers in the Sheriff’s Department during the April 24, 2019 meeting.

With the County Jail currently depopulated, Sheriff Jeremy Shipley is on a mission to get better pay and incentives for jailers in an attempt to keep enough employees to be able to run the facility.

According to Sheriff Shipley, budgets are down by five percent and salaries by seven percent.

“We are sitting in a hole,” he says.

County Judge Linda Grant stated that salary for jailers and other positions at the Sheriff’s Office would be discussed during budget talks this summer.

“We [Fairfield City Council] want to express our disappointment in the jail not being operational at this time,” states City of Fairfield Administrator Nate Smith.

The “Times” will continue to follow this matter and update our readers as details become available.
