Fairfield Chamber of Commerce was honored to celebrate Calpine Corp – Freestone Energy Center with a ribbon cutting for our Chamber Business of the Year, while also attending the dedication ceremony with Gov. Greg Abbott, Rep. Angelia Orr, Mayor Bobby Nichols, Robert DeWitt and many wonderful and dedicated leaders and team members for the new Pin Oak Creek Energy Center.
The new peak plant was designed to start up within minutes providing critical dispatchable power during high demand periods.
The Freestone Energy Center has been in operation since 2002 and is a natural gas-fired combined-cycle facility located on approximately 506 acres near Fairfield, Texas. The facility was Calpine’s first build in the northern part of the Texas Regional Entity market area. The Freestone Energy Center consists of four combustion turbines, four heat recovery steam generators and two steam turbine generators, configured in two largely independent power blocks. The expansion for the new peak plant began in 2023.
The Freestone Energy Center and its expansion through Pin Oak Creek represent a critical component of Texas’ energy infrastructure, combining efficient base-load generation with flexible, fast-start capacity to meet the state’s evolving electricity needs.
