The Madisonville Mustangs built a 19-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 40-14 over the Fairfield Eagles at Madisonville on Friday night.

Fairfield took the ball for the opening possession and picked up a first down on a 22-yard pass to Camren Daniels, but the Mustang defense picked off a Cameron Cockerell pass and ended the early drive. Late in the first quarter, the Eagles drive ended in a punt. The special teams were effective in downing the punt at the one-yard line and the Mustangs had a long way to go.

Jyrin Burns put the Mustangs out of the shadow of their own goal posts with a 46-yard run to near midfield. Lorenzo Johnson caught a pass for 45 more yards down inside the Eagle 10-yard line. Madisonville would make quick work of the 99-yard drive with a Burns three-yard touchdown run. The Mustangs lined up for the extra point and Collin Glass split the line and blocked the kick and the lead stood at 6-0.

The Eagle special teams rose again the punt pinned the Mustangs at the ten-yard line. After a short pass for a first down, Phillip Green took the handoff and rumbled through the Eagle defense on his way to an 81-yard touchdown run and the lead extended to 13-0 after the extra point.

The Mustangs added a third touchdown in the first half on another big play from the Madisonville offense. Williams found an open Brandon Moffett across the middle for the 70-yard touchdown and the halftime 19-0 lead.

Fairfield forced a punt in the first possession of the second half and took the offense down the field to put points on the board. On fourth down in Madisonville territory, Cockerell was under pressure and dumped a pass to Jaylon Shed and he raced up the middle of the field for the 32-yard score and Castillo made the extra point and cut the lead to 19-7.

The Mustangs answered on the next possession with two Burns runs to put Madisonville in position to score. The drive stalled and the field goal unit came on for the attempt. The field goal was no good, but the Eagles were penalized on the play and the Mustangs earned a first down. Green would score his second touchdown on the next play and extend the lead to 26-7.

The Eagles cut the lead back to 12 on a Finn Smith touchdown pass from Cockerell near the end of the third quarter. Smith made a great effort on the play with a great diving catch.

The Mustang defense scored first in the fourth quarter. Shed had the ball knocked away and Jakeithon Owens scooped it up and raced 20 yards for the touchdown. Williams and Johnson teamed up a second time late for a 36-yard score to set the final score at 40-14.

The Fairfield Eagles (0-3) will return home to take on the Robinson Rockets as the final tune-up before District 8-3A Division I play is scheduled to begin.
