Trinity Star Arts Council presents the Opening Reception for ART of the QUILT:  Quilt Exhibition by Laverne A. Brackens, National Endowment of the Arts Fellow on Thursday, October 13, 2022.

A textile artist from Fairfield, Texas, Laverne Brackens represents a long tradition of improvisational quilt making among African-American women. Born in 1927, Brackens learned the art of quilt making as a child by helping her mother tack quilts.

Currently, her pieces may be found in eight museums. The latest piece, Strip (1992), was acquired by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

The highlight of her thirty-plus year career came in 2011 when she became a recipient of a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Brackens traveled to Washington, D.C. that year, joining fellow craftsmen and artists from across the nation.

The Quilt Exhibition is Fairfield will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on October 13, 2022 at the Williford Foundation for American Arts, located at 115 S. Mount, on the courthouse square in downtown Fairfield, Texas.

The event is open to the public.
