The Teague Lions trailed 8-0 at the half and the mud and conditions worsened and the New Waverly Bulldogs pulled away for a 29-14 win in the second game of the season.

The early afternoon and evening brought more rain to the area and the playing conditions were bad at best for both teams. The kickoff was delayed for nearly 45 minutes until the lightning decreased and allowed the players to take the field and slip and slide their way through the game.

Dodging a tackle is Teague’s #25 Ke’Mauri Evans.

New Waverly scored and with the two-point conversion led 8-0 at the half. Shamar Davis got away from the defense for a 48-yard run on one drive in the first half but the Lions could not put points on the board in the opening 24 minutes.

Zak Leija ripped off a 28-yard run through the slush and was knocked out of bounds inside the Bulldog ten-yard line. Davis finished off the drive with a touchdown run to cut the lead to 15-6.

diving for the tackle is Teague Lion #18 Caden Gonzales, as #1 Jehmel Rice is runs up for support.

Leija would add a 23-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter and the successful conversion cut the lead to 29-14, which would be the eventual final score.

Encouraged by his coach is Teague Lion #51 Alez Perez.

Leija was the leading rusher for the Lions with 91 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown and Davis added 70 hard earned yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

Putting a stop to a New Waverly run is #1 Jehmel Rice.

The Teague defense had five takeaways in the game with two interceptions each by Tylin Randle and Caden Gonzales and one by Jehmel Rice. Gonzales had a 17-yard reception and a blocked punt on his side of the ball for the night.

The Lions will play at home this Friday, September 9th against Centerville. Go, Lions!

The Teague Lions fall to 0-2 on the young season and return home to take on the Centerville Tigers on Friday night.
