The Teague Lions built a modest halftime lead and then the heavens rained down and the game was postponed. All in all, the Lions shut out the Kemp Yellowjackets and a win on Friday would secure a runner up finish in the district race.

The Lions dominated the day, both days actually, and the game was never in question from the opening kickoff. The defensive unit from the Lions stopped any threat early and the Lion offense resumed their dominance from the game last week against Groesbeck.

The Lions special team’s unit got the first strike of the evening when Jaden Cole returned the opening kickoff almost 70 yards down to the Yellowjacket 20-yard line. The Lion offense quickly turned the field position into points on a Zak Leija connection to Jehmel Rice for the games first touchdown. The two-point conversion was good, and the Teague led 8-0.

The first Yellowjacket possession was movement inside the Lions 20-yard line. Kemp converted two fourth down conversions on the drive and on the third attempt on fourth down from the Lion 19, Leija knocked the pass away and Teague took over possession.

The big play put the Teague offense and it appeared the game would be decided early. Leija tossed a pass out to Jy’Kybryan Harris, and he raced 72 yards, making several defenders miss and scored the second touchdown of the game. The conversion was good, and the Lions extended the lead to 16-0 with five minutes remaining in the first quarter.

The remainder of the half the defenses made plays and the Lions could not sustain a scoring drive. The weather conditions began to worsen, and the half ended with the Lions leading 16-0. The Teague band completed their halftime performance, and the rain and storms began.

After two weather delays, the game was suspended, and the teams would meet on Saturday afternoon and resume the game from the halftime break.

When the day resumed, the Lions defense rose to the occasion to keep the Yellowjackets off the board. Shamar Davis picked off a pass and the Lions had the ball in Kemp territory. Jaden Cole scored on a 12-yard run and the conversion was good and the Lions extended the lead to 24-0 after a 17-hour halftime break.

The defensive theme continued when Leija picked off a Kemp pass and returned it for a touchdown. The conversion failed but the Lions led 30-0 with 9:32 remaining in the third quarter.

Korey Silar added a third quarter touchdown on a 13-yard run to extend the lead to 37-0 after Alex Lopez added the extra point.

The entire offense got into the act in the remaining time of the game. After turning Kemp away, the offense finished the third quarter and opening the fourth, the Lions put offensive lineman Alex Perez in at running back and he took the handoff and rumbled in from two yards out and the lead grew to 43-0.

The game would see a running clock, but the Lions put the final touchdown on the board on another lineman score. Isai Diaz scored on a two-yard run to close the game at 50-0.

Teague will host Fairfield in the regular season finale on Friday night. A Teague win would put the Lions in the runner up position in District 8-3A Division I since they hold the tiebreaker over Groesbeck. Malakoff leads the district standings and Groesbeck is in second with one loss and will play at Malakoff Friday.
