Responding to a call about a disabled vehicle just west of Mexia, Texas resulted in the shooting of a DPS Trooper, putting area law enforcement on high alert as the search ensued for the suspect.

Trooper Chad Walker of Groesbeck responded to a motorist assist at approximately 7:45 p.m. on Friday, March 26, 2021 near the intersection of Highway 84 and FM 2848 in Limestone County.

According to an official press release, Trooper Walker was traveling southwest on FM 2848 as he came upon the disabled vehicle parked on the shoulder of the roadway.

The trooper pulled behind the vehicle, but before he could stop his patrol until, a man immediately emerged from the driver’s seat of the disable vehicle armed with a handgun and fired multiple rounds at Trooper Walker through the windshield of the patrol unit.

Trooper Walker sustained a gunshot wound to his head and abdomen. He was transported to Baylor Scott & White – Hillcrest Hospital in Waco where he remained in critical condition over the weekend.

The shooting suspect, identified as 36-year-old DeArthur Pinson, Jr. of Palestine, a black male, returned to his vehicle, retrieved a black backpack, and fled the scene on foot.

A Blue Alert was activated as the Texas Rangers lead the investigation. They were supported by THP, AOD, CID, and other local, state, and federal partners.

It was reported the following day that Pinson had been found near the original site. Law enforcement officers breached his hiding place and the suspect committed suicide, ending the search for him.

According to public criminal records, Pinson had previously been incarcerated on two separate charges, one for aggravated robbery, a first degree felony, and one for a criminal trespass charge, a Class B misdemeanor.

VESS Counselors and a DPS Chaplain were dispatched to support the Walker family.

A statement was given on Monday by the Texas Department of Public Safety:

“After extensive life-saving efforts conducted by the Baylor Scott and White medical professionals, it has been determined that Trooper Chad Walker no longer displays signs of viable brain activity, and he remains on life-support until he can share the gift of life as an organ donor.

“This final sacrifice embodies Trooper Walker’s actions throughout his life and service as a Texas Highway Patrol Trooper.

“The Walker family is grateful for the continued support and prayers as they remain at Chad’s side.”

Trooper Walker and his wife have a 15-year-old son, twin seven-year-old daughters, and a two-month-old daughter.
