Larry Joe Pickens, Sr. passed away June 14, 2026, at his home in Oakwood, TX, at the age of 74.
He was born on February 6, 1952, in Fairfield, TX, to Talmage B. Pickens and Francis Freeman Pickens.
Larry lived in Freestone County all of his life. He worked at various companies, retiring from Northwestern Resources and Applied. He loved running heavy equipment and traveling the country. He met many people through work with pipeline, construction, and coal mining who became lifelong friends.
Larry married the love of his life, Rosemary Long, on May 29, 1970, in Fairfield, TX. They were blessed with two children; Susan Michelle and Larry Joe II “Red.” His family was his pride and joy.
He loved being on his tractor and working on his ranch. He loved his dogs, taking them riding on the gator checking cows.
Larry and Rosemary traveled often, exploring places of family history and relaxing in the mountains. Gardening was his favorite hobby all of his life.
He never met a stranger and would be the first to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Rosemary Pickens of Oakwood; daughter, Susan Pickens and Richard of Buffalo; son, Larry Joe Pickens II “Red” and Kasie of Eustace; grandchildren, Chris Pickens and Alicia of Oakwood, Emily Drinkard of Teague, Ashlyn Pickens and Lauryn Pickens of Eustace; great-grandchildren, Jace, Gracie, Jocelynn, Averie, Lawson, Memphis, Amelia, and Lincoln; brothers, Walter Pickens and Mabel of Teague and Jerry Pickens of Fairfield; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Talmage and Francis Pickens; and brother Stanley Pickens.
Visitation for family and friends is scheduled for Friday, June 19, 2026, from 10-11 am at the Capps Memorial Chapel.
A Graveside Service will follow at Dew Cemetery at 11:30 am with Rev. Walter Pickens officiating.
