The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is about one (1) in twenty-five (25) for women.  However, each person’s risk might be higher or lower, depending on their risk factors for colorectal cancer.  Factors that increase colorectal cancer risk include physical inactivity, a diet high in red and processed meats, excess body weight, smoking, alcohol use, and a personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps.  Getting to and staying at a healthy weight as well as making lifestyle changes, may help lower the risk of colorectal cancer.
