What is a Constable? Well, simply put, they are a Peace Officer.

Have you ever wondered what a Constable does? They can handle traffic, write tickets, conduct investigations, and make arrest.

On Monday, July 22nd, 2019 Freestone County Constables hosted a BBQ lunch for the citizens in order to educate them all on what the Constable office does.

SERVING FOOD DURING MONDAY’S free BBQ lunch was a big job. Constable Pamela Barnes (second from right) thanked Eleanor DeViller, Doris McWilliam, and Katherine Jackson for their assistance.

Constables have the ability to serve Justice of the Peace, criminal, even civil warrants.

Civil law tends to be more technical than criminal, so Constable is required to have additional training in specialized schools.

A Constable only reports to the governor, Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, and the citizens who have elected them. A Constable also serves civil process and bailiff court for the Justice of the Peace of their Precinct.

Stephen F. Austin first organized a Constable force in 1823. The office of Constable was provided for in the Constitution of the Republic of Texas (1836).

In Texas’ early statehood, Constables were the most active law-enforcement official in many Texas counties.

Freestone County has four precincts, and four constables.

–Precinct Three – Pamela Barnes

–Precinct Four – Wade Harrison
