Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR held their monthly meeting at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas, March 13, 2019.
The meeting was called to order by Regent Nancy McSwane who led members in the DAR Ritual.
Registrar Billie Bournias welcomed newest member Linda Thornton (above), of Teague into the National Society and our local chapter.

Regent McSwane introduced our program on “Insights to Researching Your Ancestors” given by Teresa Penny.
Mrs. Penny began her research twenty-two years ago, but over the past few years has increased her knowledge and training. She has completed courses in Genealogy Librarianship, Twenty-First Century Genealogy Library Services, Methodology I and II through the national Institute for Genealogical Studies. Teresa has, for the last few years, attended the Texas State Genealogy Conference.
In 2017 she attended the first Texas Institute for Genealogy Research held at the University of Texas and will be attending again this June for Southern Records Research. Mrs. Penny currently teaches a genealogy class once a month at the Groesbeck Library where she is employed as Assistant Librarian.
Mrs. Penny told members the most important question is ‘What do you want to know.’ From this, you create a research objective listing what you know, then analyze the data you have collected.
She gave many important tools to help with this process and sites to use for your research.
The next meeting will be April 10th at the library in Mexia with State Regent Susan Greene Tillman giving the program.
Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership.
