This past Friday marked the 98th anniversary of the end of the First World War, the “War to end all Wars”. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, the guns that raged across Europe from the forests of the Ardennes to the fields of Flanders fell silent.  Officially 116,708 Americans lost their lives during the war, 53,402 in combat, a minor figure compared to the millions of Europeans and their allied colonist who died in the trenches and on the high seas. There were no real winners in this war, for only one generation later armies marched again across the same blood soaked fields, the conflict of the 1940’s would involve almost all the nations of the Earth in some way or other, and would claim many more millions in lives.
“Armistice Day”, the end of the “Great War”, was celebrated until 1954 when Congress authorized the observance of this day as “Veterans Day”, a day to honor all Americans who have served this nation in the Armed Forces. We owe a debt that can never honestly be repaid to the men and women who wore the uniform, fully aware that they may be called to give their lives in defense of the freedoms that we all enjoy, and mostly take for granted. We set aside one day to officially observe and honor their service, but we should thank our veterans each and every time when see them, for their willingness to defend all of us, and defend the freedoms that we should cherish. If you served our nation in the Armed Forces, no matter what your role or duty, we at the Freestone County Sheriff’s Office Thank You! And we pray for the blessings of our Lord upon you and yours.
