Freestone County 2021 Aggie Muster was a huge success. A large group gathered at the Circle O Ranch, east of Fairfield Wednesday evening, April 21. Mark and Jane Phillips were host and Randy Maness was 2021 Muster Chair.
Muster included a program honoring all Aggies that have lost their lives since our 2020 Muster. Local Aggies that were remembered included Bob Pearson’47, Wiley Garrett ’57, Bobby Robinson ’66 and Rick Medford ’70.
Our speaker for the evening was Griff Lasley ’74. Griff did an awesome job on reliving some of his days at Texas A&M. Griff attended Texas A&M from 1970 -1974. He was in the Corps of Cadets and was Company Commander of B-1 his Senior year, plus he was a Yell Leader for 3 years (fish, Junior and Senior) and was Head Yell Leader Senior year. He also served in the Ross Volunteers. Grif graduated in May of 1974 with a degree in Animal Science. He was commissioned in the US Army and served for 8 years. Grif’s career includes feed yard cowboy, new car dealership manager, commodity broker, grain dealer and Aftermarket Parts – Currently he owns and operates six auto and industrial parts stores in the Western Texas Panhandle and Oklahoma. Griff has lived in Stratford, TX in the Texas Panhandle most of his life and enjoys ALL Aggie Sports, his grandkids, church and trying to learn to play the guitar.
Participating in the evening’s success were Fred Galley, Griff Lasley, Randy & Sonya Maness, Julie Ann and Tom Medford, Brian & Carman Mannen, Mark & Jane Phillips, Todd and Jack Phillips, Scott Royal and Jay & Kay Stevens.
Aggie Muster is one of Texas A&M’s most honored traditions and is celebrated in more than 300 locations worldwide and is a wonderful event to connect with fellow Aggies as well as those that enjoy the spirit of Aggieland.
The Muster Tradition:
Aggies gathered together on June 26, 1883, to live over again their college days, the victories and defeats won and lost upon the drill field and in the classroom. By April 21, 1903, this annual gathering evolved into a celebration of Texas Independence on San Jacinto Day. These early meetings included field games and banquets for Aggies to reflect and celebrate their memories of Aggieland. “Let every alumni answer a roll call,” wrote the Former Students. It was not until 1922, however, that April 21 became the official day of events for all Aggies; thus, the annual tradition of Muster was born. The March 1923 Texas Aggie urged, “If there is an A&M man in one hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas.”
