Juneteenth is now a federal holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
It is celebrated on June 19 as this was the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas in1865.
According to local historians, the name “Juneteenth” was coined in Mexia, as their celebrations were 3-day affairs, from June 17-19.
At least two celebrations are planned in Freestone County this week:
Butler
The City of Butler invites all to their Juneteenth 2026 Celebration – ‘We Won’t Go Back’ on Saturday, June 20.
The event is from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and will feature a Grand Parade and Car Show at the Butler Community Center / E.E. Wheat Memorial Center in Butler.
Food Truck will be on site.

Teague
BTW J.A. Brooks Alumni Association is hosting a Juneteenth Parade in Teague on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Join them as they celebrate with a parade through downtown Teague, Texas beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Lineup starts at 9:00 a.m.
