Last week, Freestone County Sheriff Jeremy Shipley gave special recognition to four law enforcement officers who bravely, and selflessly, serve the citizens of Freestone County, Texas. Here is what he had to say:

As the elected Sheriff I get the privilege of doing many special occasions or events, for which I’m honored to be able to do or be a part of. This past week I had the opportunity to recognize 4 law enforcement officers in Freestone County for one of the highest awards and recognition you can receive.

On October 8, 2022, in the early morning hours, there was a major vehicle accident in Fairfield that involved a vehicle leaving the roadway, going airborne, and entering an office building. On impact, there was a burst of flames and the vehicle caught fire inside the building with the individuals being entrapped within the car.

FCSO Deputies Justin Campbell and Chad Hill we’re first on scene and began fighting the fire with fire extinguishers in attempt to keep the fire from moving further into the cab of the car. Fairfield Police Officer Josh Ashley soon arrived on seen, as well as DPS Trooper Josh Schlaudt, and they too started making multiple entries in and out of the building as they tried holding off the fire with extinguishers and battling through the smoke. The officers were eventually able to pull the passenger through the passenger window and carry her to safety.

Due to their quick actions and continuous selfless efforts, they bought enough time for the Fire Department to arrive on scene who were then able to handle the remaining fire and assist in getting the driver of the vehicle removed from the car and to safety and medical attention.

Deputy Campbell, Deputy Hill, FPD Ofc. Ashley, and Texas State Trooper Schlaudt acted with courage and bravery, with total disregard to their own safety and well-being for the life of two young adults. Due to their actions that undoubtedly saved lives, these officers are deserving of the highest recognition and award.

It was with great pride and honor that these officers were recognized and congratulated in front of all the FCSO employees and the recipients’ families.

Receiving a Life Saving Award, as well as a Letter of Commendation was Deputy Justin Campbell and Deputy Chad Hill.

Receiving a Letter of Commendation, and having a copy submitted to their supervisor and agency, were FPD Ofc. Josh Ashley and DPS Trooper Josh Schlaudt.

Thank you for your dedication to protecting and serving in the law enforcement profession. We are blessed as citizens to have the law enforcement professionals we have serving us in Freestone County.

Sheriff J. Shipley

A message from Chief David Utsey and Assistant Chief Albert Gallegos:

Officer Josh Ashley has been with the department for a few years.

Josh is an exemplary officer and works hard every day he is at work. The Fairfield Police Department is proud and honored to have someone like Officer Josh Ashley.

Law enforcement needs more officers like Josh.
