No idea was too outrageous when it came to revitalizing the Sulphur Springs downtown area, according to City Manager Marc Maxwell, who visited with a group from Fairfield on a beautiful sunny day in April.

When citizens wanted bathrooms on the courthouse square, Maxwell looked up information on see-through glass walls (above) to create one of the most visited attractions in Texas.

Although it may sound a bit risqué, Maxwell says that parents have found it to be useful, as they can keep an eye on their kids playing in the water spouts (above) as they answer the call from Mother Nature.

Another surprising feature in this city’s downtown required just a simple phone call to Tesla. City Manager Maxwell shares that after he called to inquire about a Supercharger, they were in town the following week.

“They paid for everything,” he says. All the City had to do was put in a sidewalk and some parking.

Downtown lampposts feature a ledge for your drink and and an outlet that may be used to charge your mobile device.

One of the first things visitors notice about downtown Sulphur Springs is how narrow the streets are for drivers, and how wide the sidewalks for pedestrians.

Each city block in downtown Suphur Springs includes directories to local eateries for the convenience of out-ot-town visitors.

“Downtown is the heart of a City,” says Sulphur Springs’ City Manager. His proudest moments are when the nightlife activities or special events overflow with people into the brick-lined streets, forcing vehicles to detour around.

The Fairfield group came aways with several ideas, as well as a list of resources to explore.
