Author and Fairfield native Tamara Rittershaus, daughter of Steve and Kay Neal, launched two humorous books for kids on the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter. Tamara’s campaign soared to 57% funded in the first week and continues to make waves!
Tamara founded Pull a Wagon Publishing, a boutique publisher of children’s books, with the mission to create books that are equally engaging and educational.
Mermaids Don’t Fart is laugh-out-loud funny, but it also introduces kids to buoyancy in water and the symbiotic relationship of an eel and a cleaner shrimp.
When best friends Eel and Shrimp make a friendly wager about mermaid habits, things go terribly wrong in deep water. Shrimp gets trapped and Eel needs a mermaid to save his friend’s life. You’ll have to read what happens when a mermaid dives that deep! (Bubbles? What bubbles?!)
The accompanying early reader, Eel’s Book of Mermaid Jokes, supports reading and language development through puns and wordplays. The bold illustrations support the child’s reading comprehension, and the humor keeps kids engaged.
Kickstarter has an “all-or-nothing” fundraising model, meaning if Tamara doesn’t reach 100% of her $6000 funding goal, she loses it all.
Several Freestone County residents have already pledged to back Tamara’s campaign. The backers can pick their own rewards: ebooks, books, an author visit, or even getting custom mermaid art by Alvin Adhi, the illustrator of Mermaids Don’t Fart.
