narfe_sept_mtg_ennis_mayor_092116The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1191 held its monthly meeting at the Grand Ennis Buffet in Ennis on Tues., 13 Sept 2016. The guest speaker was Angie Jeunemann, the new Mayor of Ennis. It was noted that Ms Jeunemann is a native of Ennis and is the first female mayor of Ennis or in Ellis County.
The mayor provided a very comprehensive overview of the projects that the city is undertaking to provide an optimum environment for its citizens and businesses.  She noted the Crime Control Prevention District Board, site selection for a new fire and police station, and the downtown masterplan for water, sewer and streets.  It was noted that much of the infrastructure was a hundred years old and needed upgrading.  Also mentioned were the park board activities including a disc golf course and efforts to increase park space as well as additional playground equipment.  A grant has been obtained to provide an airport consultant to make recommendation for upgrade.
A regional study on city staff compensation as well as the health plan for employees is being conducted. Also, a group is reviewing the city charter that has been updated only once, in 1956, in its 100 plus years of existence. Improvements in fund balances; provision of better equipment for first responders; library improvements; a grant to upgrade the fire department, which helps to reduce insurance rates; overhaul of planning and zoning procedures; and street improvements were covered.  A question and answer session followed the Mayor’s presentation.
