The Fairfield Eagles remained close through three quarters but fell to the Brownsboro Bears 41-20 in Brownsboro on Friday night.
Fairfield falls to 0-2 on the young season and will return to Eagle Field to take on Madisonville. They are joined by Teague, Kemp and Mexia as 0-2 to start the season in District 8-3A Division I.
The Eagles had a punt in the opening quarter and the five-yard punt set the Bears at the Fairfield 31-yard line. Brownsboro quarterback Jaxyn Rogers completed passes to Vincent Chancellor and Gekyle Baker to reach inside the Eagle ten-yard line. Antone Campbell finished the short drive with a nine-yard touchdown run and took a 7-0 lead.
An Eagle interception would set up another big play opportunity for Brownsboro. Baker was hit in stride by Rogers for the 57-yard touchdown catch and run and the lead grew to 14-0.
Fairfield running back Eli Martin had one of his best rushing games of his career with a 36-yard run to put the Eagles in position to score.
The drive would stall on a bad snap on fourth down and Fairfield could not move the chains and Brownsboro took over heading into the second quarter.
Brownsboro put another touchdown on the board in their first possession of the second quarter. Campbell caught a pass that covered 31 yards and then Rogers passed to Dylan Downey. Downey broke two tackles and raced to the end zone and the Bears extended their lead to 20-0 following the missed conversion.
The Eagles took to the airways for their first score and made quick work of the drive. Eagle quarterback Cameron Cockerell passed to Martin, who broke a couple of tackles for a 21-yard gain to near midfield. Cockerell dropped to pass from there and hit Jonathon Garcia for a 47-yard touchdown to cut into the lead. Garcia added the extra point and the Bears had a 20-7 lead.
Brownsboro tried to take advantage of good field position late in the first half. Braiden Barrett hit Rogers while the Bears were trying to score and the ball came loose. The Bears offense were able to recover but they lost 16 yards on the play. Brady Williams followed that with a sack and the Bears could not get any closer at the end of the first half.
The Bears scored the first touchdown of the second half. Rogers and Chancellor connected for a 39-yard score to extend the lead to 27-7.
The Eagles responded in just a few plays to cut the score back to 13. Calyn Wilson returned the kickoff to the Brownsboro 48-yard line and on the first play of the drive, Martin broke through the defense and would score on a 48-yard run and Garcia’s point after cut the lead to 27-14.
Fairfield tried the onsides kick and were successful. Garcia made the kick take the giant pop up and Jacorey Daniels recovered in Brownsboro territory but the drive would stall and the Eagles would punt the ball away.
Rogers and Downey teamed up for another touchdown, this one covering 52 yards and the lead was restored to 34-14. Martin added another touchdown from one yard out on the next possession and Fairfield cut the lead to 34-20.
Brownsboro added a late touchdown on a 63-yard touchdown run by Campbell to set the final score at 41-20.
