Update on Local COVID-19 Cases and Vaccination Sites

It was reported over the weekend that at least 5 of the 51 Texas House Democrats who traveled to Washington, D.C. last week have tested positive for the coronavirus.

All of the lawmakers have been fully vaccinated, which helps protect against severe illness.

Those who tested positive showed no symptoms, or only mild symptoms.

The group has been following CDC guidelines and protocols; and have begun daily rapid tests for all members and staff.

According to the CDC, vaccine breakthrough cases, in which a fully vaccinated person tests positive for coronavirus, have been expected with the rise in variants of the virus. However, they do remain rare, and do not discount the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccines.

FULLY VACCINATED
As of Monday, July 19th, 25.7 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine has been administered to 14.3 million Texans.

Over 51% of people 12 years or older are now fully vaccinated in our state. This number comprises about 75% of Texans as 65 or older.

Here are the percentages of fully vaccinated individuals in local counties:

–Freestone: 31.12% | 52.18%

COVID-19 Variants
Because viruses constantly change through mutation, new variants of the virus that causes COVID-19 are expected to occur. Multiple variants have been documented in Texas and the United States that may spread more easily or cause more serious illness.

Current scientific evidence indicates that available vaccines are effective at protecting people from severe illness caused by these variants.

Public health officials at the federal, state and local levels continue to study them, monitor their spread, develop strategies to slow their spread and test how variants may respond to existing therapies, vaccines and testing.
