Clara Marie Childs was born June 12, 1926 in Freestone County to Alvin Thomas and Alice Winkler.

She married Aubrey Childs on February 5, 1946. They were married a little more than 72 years until Aubrey’s recent passing in June. They had two children; a daughter, Alice May Waldrop, of Fairfield and a son, Robert “Bobby” Childs of Teague.

Together, Marie and Aubrey were very active members of VFW Post #5872 in Fairfield, serving in many different capacities. Marie was very active in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary. She served as District president, State President and held a National Office. She and Aubrey were dedicated volunteers at the VA Hospital in Marlin, Texas.

Clara Marie spent much of her life fundraising for cancer aid and research. She was also active in the Buddy Poppy fundraiser that benefitted veterans, their families and other veteran’s programs. Marie and Aubrey together lived their lives as dedicated servants to betterment of others and their community.

Clara Marie is preceded in death by her husband, Aubrey Childs; her parents Alvin Thomas and Alice Winkler; a sister, Alva “Baby” Fryer and a brother, Alvin “Son” Thomas Winkler, Jr. She is survived by daughter, Alice May Waldrop of Fairfield, and Son, Bobby Childs of Teague.

Grandchildren, Misty Childs Harrelson and husband, Robert of Huntsville, Texas; Jennifer Childs of Dallas; Blake Childs of Midland; and Rachel Waldrop of Fairfield. A sister, Verna May, of Odessa and a brother, Clayton Sewell and wife, Beverly, of Fairfield. She also has many loved nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Griffin-Roughton in Fairfield from 3-5 pm. Service was at Griffin-Roughton Monday, October 22, 2018 at 10 am. Graveside followed at Fairfield Cemetery.
