The Fairfield City Council passed a resolution, during their Friday, March 27, 2020 Council Meeting, postponing the May 2, 2020 city election.
The election will take place in conjunction with the state and federal elections Tuesday, November 3, 2020. An executive order, by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, allowed cities, schools and other entities to postpone elections due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. The postponement was recommended by the governor, as well as the city attorney.
“The city feels that postponing the election is better for the safety of the voters and the local election judges,” Mayor Kenneth Hughes said. “In addition, the council feels that this is not the time to be campaigning, but instead helping with the Coronavirus effort.”
The current slate of candidates will not change. The deadline to register to vote is October 5, with early voting October 19 through October 30.
More information will be made available once arrangements have been finalized.
Also during last week’s meeting, Council approved extending the Mayor’s Declaration of Disaster to April 14th, which would be the next Regular Meeting scheduled for Fairfield Council. The extension was required as a mayoral declaration can only in effect a total of seven days.
In addition, several notices have been posted online by the City of Fairfield.
First, there’s was some confusion as some citizens believed Fairfield City Hall to be closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
No, it is not, according to City Administrator Nate Smith.
“Misty Richardson and I are still here and are practicing social distancing, as we all should be doing right now,” said Smith.
They are available via phone at 903-389-2633, email contact@fairfieldtexas.net, or send a message on Facebook. “We will get to your request as soon as possible,” said the City Administrator.
Also, many residents have asked about dump passes.
By order of Mayor Kenneth Hughes, the city dump will be open free of charge to city residents.
Residents need to bring their water bill as proof of residency.
If you are having difficulty, or do not have a water bill handy, call City Hall at 903-389-2633.
“Thank you for using social distancing and following the guidelines,” said City Administrator Smith.
Finally, effective immediately, the kiddie park and the basketball court at the Fairfield City Park will be closed until further notice.
“This decision was made in the interest of public safety during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said City Administrator Smith.
