Funeral services for Charles Johnson will be held Friday, July 28, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Griffin-Roughton Funeral Home in Fairfield. Barry Pett, pastor at Redeemer Church in Tomball, Texas, will officiate. Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. A private burial service will be held Friday afternoon at Antioch Cemetery of Luna for close family members.
Charles Edward Johnson was born on September 12, 1936, in Houston, Texas, to Roy and Dora Johnson. He has one sister, Donnie Renfro of Jacksonville, Florida. He is a graduate of the Cy-Fair Independent School District, class of 1954. After graduating he went to work for First National Bank in Houston.
Charles was drafted into the United States Army and did a tour of duty in Korea. He obtained the rank of sergeant and was honorably discharged in August 1961.
He moved to the Freestone County area in the mid-60’s and began work in road construction. He then went to work for the Teague Independent School District, where he was the tax collector/business manager. He gave 32 years to the district and the Teague community.
In February of 1973, Charles attended the wedding of a friend and was introduced to a young woman named Pam. Several dances turned into several months of dating and on December 14 of the same year they were married. Pam moved to the Teague area with her two children, Michael and Alisa, and they began life together as a family.
And then, eight years later, Charles and Pam were given quite the shock when they found out they were expecting twins. On December 17, 1981, Matthew Douglas and Amanda Anne arrived as an early Christmas present and joined the family.
Charles loved to farm and hunt. He raised cows on their land outside of Teague for many years. Summers were spent in the hayfield. And not a day went by that you couldn’t have found Charles sitting in his chair in the barn drinking a Dr. Pepper or doing something on a tractor. And we all know every single tractor in that barn was John Deere green and yellow.
He hunted at the same deer lease on the Strackbein Ranch in Doss, Texas, for over 50 years. He and his hunting buddies built the cabin they stayed in from the foundation up, and their children and even grandchildren have all spent holidays there and created too many memories and laughs and stories to recount.
Charles always loved and supported his family unconditionally, and his world revolved around the grandchildren who brought such joy to his life. He enjoyed their visits to the farm where there were tractors and gators to ride; chances to feed the cows, deer, and ducks; playing around the barn; hayrides/hot dog roasts over a campfire in the fall; and plenty of fish to catch.
Charles was a beloved husband, dad, grandfather, and friend. He will forever remain in the hearts and in the cherished memories of many, including: wife of almost 50 years, Pam Johnson; son, Michael Montgomery and wife Lisa of Teague; son, Matthew Johnson and wife D’Ann of College Station, Texas, and their children Kailey, Kelcie, and Collin; daughter, Amanda Odom and husband Matt of Spring, Texas, and their children Luke, Will, Evan, and Emery; sister, Donnie Renfro of Jacksonville, Florida; nephew, Art Renfro and wife Paula of Jacksonville, Florida, and their children Morgan and Brooke; and nephew, Steven Renfro and wife Brandee of Roswell, Georgia, and their children Ethan and Elliot.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his daughter, Alisa Montgomery.
