The Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR honored Veterans with a Christmas luncheon, December 5, 2018, at Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas.

Regent Nancy McSwane introduced guest and welcomed members. Member Leigh Ann Holmes Steen of Teague was introduced.

Haylee Young of Teague was the winner of the Jonathan Hardin Good Citizen Essay Contest. The qualities for this individual are dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism.  Miss Young read her inspiring essay.

Regent McSwane introduced J.B.”Bug” Paschal, Jr. who was awarded DAR Distinguished Citizen Medal from our chapter. Mr. Paschal is a former POW and told of his time while serving in WWII. He initially trained in searchlight and radar technology for the Coast Guard artillery, but when the Battle of the Bulge began he was transferred to the 83rd Infantry Division, 331 Infantry Regiment Co. and sent to Belgium. Mr. Paschal told of his capture and time as a POW. He said you never forget the time spent as a POW and he thinks about it more about it now.

Regent McSwane introduced Joe “Joe Rob” Roberts who served in the Air Force. Mr. Roberts has been a volunteer, helping veterans and their families since 2013. Mr. Roberts introduced Glen Clark who is the VP Mexia Associate Coordinator. Mr. Roberts comes to Mexia several times a week and operates out of the VFW and American Legion building. He also serves at the Veteran Partners of Mexia Volunteer coordinator, and as the President of the Board of Directors for Veteran Partners. They are also a Commemorative partner with the DOD 50th Vietnam Commemorative Program. Mr. Roberts was presented an Outstanding Veteran Volunteer Award from our chapter.

The members divided the gift bags to be delivered to the veterans in the Nursing Homes in Limestone and Freestone Counties.

Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership.
