The Dabrett Black Capital Murder trial has been moved to Brazos County, and is set to start the beginning of August 2020.
Black is charged with the shooting death of Texas DPS Trooper Damon Allen.
The purpose behind moving Black’s trial to Brazos County is to offer him a fair and impartial trial due to a small population to pool the jury from, and pervasive media coverage.
All other parts of the trial process will be handled in Freestone County, with a Pre-Trial scheduled for December 11th, 2019.
One thing taken into consideration while setting the date is that the Defendant’s attorney, Susan Anderson, is a Regional Public Defender who only handles capital murder trials. They have another trial ongoing at the same time, so fair time must be given to each.
District Court Judge Patrick Simmons set the trial for the early part of August 2020.
Allegedly on Thanksgiving Day 2017 Allen had pulled Black over in, what he believed would be a routine traffic stop. Instead, Black followed Allen back to his patrol unit and fired a rifle at him point blank taking his life.
Black fled the scene, and a massive manhunt reportedly ensued throughout Central Texas.
After being spotted in Waller County, Black again fired at an officer, according to reports.
Reportedly, K-9 Officer Odin was called in with partner, Deputy Andrew Blauser, to assist in Black’s apprehension.
Odin did his job and Black soon was in cuffs according to reports filed.
The “Times” will continue to follow and update on the case proceedings.
