Mini Cheer Graduates Show Out at the Game on Friday, September 22, 2023.

The Wortham Bulldogs opened district play with a dominating win over the Hubbard Jaguars with a 63-0 at Bulldog Stadium Friday night.
In the 39 meetings in the series, this was the second time the Bulldogs held Hubbard to a zero on the scoreboard. Wortham defeated Hubbard 7-0 in the 1952 matchup in Hubbard and the teams battled to a 0-0 tie in Wortham way back in 1944.

The Bulldog defense kept the Jaguars off the scoreboard and held them to nine yards total offense and one first down in the first half, while building a 35-0 lead.

Hubbard recovered an onside kick to open the game but could not convert on a fourth down from midfield. It took only two plays for the Bulldogs to put the only points on the board they would need. Yancey Bean took the handoff and cruised to the first of his five touchdowns on the night with a 57-yard score. Jesse Saldana lined up for the first extra point attempt of the season for the Bulldogs and it sailed true for the early 7-0 lead.

Wortham took the ball at midfield for their second score of the opening quarter. Evan McCoslin ripped off a 26 run to the 40-yard line and junior quarterback Jon Ross Black finished the drive with a 21-yard touchdown run. Saldana added the extra point for the 14-0 lead.

Black returned a punt to the Jaguar 28-yard line and again, needing only two plays this time to add to the lead. Black hit Bean on the far sideline with a 22-yard touchdown pass and the Bulldogs led 20-0 at the end of the first quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, the Jaguars lined up in punt formation. Colton Bailes bobbled the snap and Bean tackled him back at the Hubbard ten-yard line. Bean pushed through for the touchdown and Black added the conversion run for the 28-0 lead.

Black added a 34-yard touchdown run with just under four minutes remaining in the first half and the Bulldogs led 35-0.

Bean added a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter and McCoslin scored on a four-yard run to blow the game open at 56-0 through three quarters.

McCoslin added this third touchdown of the game on a 24-yard run midway through the final quarter that featured a running clock and the game ended 63-0.

The win marks the third straight over the Hubbard Jaguars and four wins in the last five meetings.

Wortham (4-1, 1-0) will travel to Meridian on Friday night. The Bulldogs were joined by Mart and Frost as district winners.
