The Wortham Bulldogs had a change of game location but that made no difference in a complete domination of the Rosebud-Lott Cougars 30-0 at Cougar Field in Travis on Friday.
The day of heavy rain necessitated a change of location for the game. The original site, Bulldog Stadium took on a lot of rain and the school officials and coaches made the change about six hours before kickoff. The game was moved to Rosebud-Lott High School, so the notification was sent out to all media outlets.
The Bulldogs would have perhaps their most complete game in recent years with a dominating 30-0 over the Cougars. Tanner Bean finished with 151 rushing yards and got most of the fourth quarter off in the win that moves the Bulldogs to 2-0 on the season.
The Cougars took the ball first and quarterback Jamarquis Johnson ripped off an 11-yard run and then passed to Jaylyn Thomas for 29 yards to the Bulldog 29-yard line. Johnson passed to Breon Lewis to the Bulldog one-yard line and the Cougars were in position to put the first points on the board. Johnson was dragged for a loss and then got one back on a run by Moses Fox. On fourth and goal, Fox took the ball on a jet sweep and the Bulldog defense made him change directions and he slipped and the Bulldogs took over on their own seven-yard line.
Tanner Bean got the Bulldogs out of the shadow of their own end with a 61-yard run to the Cougar 24-yard line. Three plays later, Bean scored on a seven-yard run, completing a 93-yard drive for the first points of the game. Bean ran in the conversion and the Bulldogs led 8-0 with 4:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Wortham forced a three and out and took over near midfield. Bean had a 29-yard run deep into Cougar territory and Ryken Lewis would score on a quarterback keeper. The touchdown was called back on a penalty. Lewis converted a third down inside the five and then they get personnel back on the field and faced a fourth and goal at the 17. Lewis threw the fade into the endzone to Derek Bullard for the touchdown, but the lead moved to 16-0 on the Lewis conversion run.
The Bulldogs took the ball to open the second half and took over six minutes off the clock and advanced to the Cougar 20-yard line and then turned the ball over on downs. The teams exchanged punts and the Cougars began their second possession of the second half. Johnson had been in and out of the Cougar offense most of the night and he returned to take the snap and Cash Perez knocked the ball loose and Preston Batts jumped on for the recovery.
Wortham wasted no time putting points to extend the lead. Lewis found Perez along the hash mark and he reached up and made the catch for the 18-yard touchdown catch and the second touchdown pass for Lewis on the night. The conversion was no good and the Bulldog lead remained at 22-0 with :22 remaining in the third quarter.
On the first play of the next Cougar possession, Johnson passed deep on the near sideline and Isaiah Tull picked it off and return it 27 yards to the Cougar 45.
The Bulldogs needed three plays, all runs by Bean and scored on a Bean 15 yard run with 11:13 remaining in the game.
Ryken Lewis picked off the Kyle Finan pass and later, Kymani Johnson picked off a pass in the endzone to preserve the shutout.
Wortham will return home for their “official” home opener when they take on the Leon Cougars on Friday night.
