Hunger is a problem that exists in urban, suburban and rural communities; it has no boundaries. In fact, Texas and Louisiana have a food insecurity rate of 16.2%, meaning more than 5 million people don’t have access to enough food. Each year, more than 46 million Americans—including 12 million children—are served by Feeding America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief organization. Milk is one of the most requested, but least donated items at food banks. In other words, children in need may be missing out on the 9 essential nutrients, including 8 grams of high-quality protein in each 8 ounce serving, that it supplies.

To help address this issue, Brookshire Brothers and David’s joined Feeding America this past June with the aim to deliver nutrient-rich gallons of milk to local kids and families who may otherwise go without. Thanks to generous donations from shoppers, 3163 gallons of milk will be distributed to those served by the following food banks: Southeast Texas Food Bank, Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana, Food Bank of Central Louisiana, Food Bank of the Golden Crescent, Central Texas Food Bank, East Texas Food Bank, Houston Food Bank, North Texas Food Bank, and Tarrant Area Food Bank.

To date, more than 1 million gallons of milk have been delivered to families across the country through The Great American Milk Drive, including thousands of gallons donated by customers of Brookshire Brothers and David’s.
