Members of Freestone Cancer Support Group presented a “Pink Out” blanket to Fairfield ISD teacher, Michelle Welch, in appreciation for all the money raised over the years on Pink Out Day.
The quilt was made by Kathy Logsdon.
Michelle Welch started Pink Out at Fairfield High School in 2012 after the death of one of her best friends who was a classmate and beta club president of 1988, Jonya Anderson Schuman.
“Jonya developed breast cancer and beat it once, but when it came back, it came back with a vengeance,” said Welch.
Jonya was the daughter of life long Fairfield residents Bradley and Anita Anderson, older sister Tonya Lindsey. Jonya passed away in May of 2012.
Jonya moved to Tye, Texas in 1994 and married Craig Schuman, who passed away the year before she died of colon cancer. They had three children Bonnie Schuman Koch, David Schuman and Carrie Grace Schuman.
“She was passionate about life, family, friends and her love for Christ,” said Welch.
Since 2012, the Beta club has donated over 25k to Freestone county cancer support group.
“We also give a Jonya Anderson Schuman Memorial Scholarship yearly to a Beta member who exhibits passion, integrity and service,” said Welch. “The scholarship is sent to her oldest daughter, Bonnie, who picks and presents the recipient the scholarship.”
Since this year is kind of crazy, Amy Evans of East Pine Design helped us with the sales of the pink out shirts,” said Welch.
