February is National Bird Feeding Month.

As we all know, a good portion of North American birds migrate seasonally, over 300 species of birds in fact.

Regardless of migration patterns, February is the most difficult month for a bird to survive, not because of the cold, but because of lack of access to food, and in some locations water.

So! To help the birds, make sure they have food, shelter and water. In turn, the birds will give you an ever-changing backyard view that is just as beautiful as it is entertaining.

There are many, many choices for bird feeders. If you prefer a certain bird, you might consider a little bit of research into attracting exactly what you want frequenting your backyard.

Alternatively, you can get you a bird feeder, or two or three, and try a variety of different feeds to attract as many birds as possible.

While planning where to put your bird feeder, take into consideration the wind and sun.

Placing feeders south of a building protects them from the cold wind that comes from the north, and if you place them on the east side they can enjoy the warming morning sun rays.

Cats will gladly nibble on readily available birds, so do make sure they are high enough to be safe from a leaping cat.

Squirrels will try to steal their food, so you need to use something like a metal cone to keep them from getting to the food.

Add in a birdbath and a few homes for the birds, and you will be creating a beautiful paradise for the birds to enjoy their meals safely.

If you keep the food stocked, the birds will learn and keep returning to visit.

More things to keep in mind is where you place them, and that you keep them clean.

A feeder should be around 30 feet away from a window to help keep birds from flying into the window.

Do not forget cleaning the feeders every few weeks.

Beautiful birds all over your backyard enjoying the delicious treats you give them makes for One Amazing Month.
