The Fairfield Eagles battled from a double-digit deficit to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Brownsboro added a late touchdown in the final minute to top the Eagles 34-27 at Eagle Stadium Friday night. The Eagles are still looking for their first win of the season in two very competitive weeks.

Brownsboro took the first possession and control of the game early with a 75-yard drive that ended with a score. On a third and short, Bear quarterback Adam Thompson fumbled the snap and, while under pressure, dumped the pass to Gekyle Baker. The short pass turned into a long 54-yard touchdown and the missed extra point held the score at 6-0.

The Eagles were forced to punt in their first two possessions and Brownsboro opened the second quarter with another score via a big play. On second and long, Thompson completed to Dominic Davis, and he raced 86 yards for the touchdown and the point after extended the lead to 13-0 with a little over a minute gone in the second quarter.

The teams exchanged interceptions midway through the second quarter, the second by Evan Chavers, who returned the pick 21 yards to the Brownsboro 33. On fourth down and eight, Fairfield quarterback Cameron Cockerell passed to Eli Castillo for the touchdown. Castillo added the extra point and Fairfield cut the lead to 13-7.

Brownsboro added to their lead when Thompson plunged over from one yard out and the Bears led 20-7 at the half.

The Eagles took the first possession of the second half and cut into the lead. The drive needed nine plays to cover 71 yards and Chavers finished the drive with a six-yard touchdown run. Castillo tacked on the extra point and the Eagles reached to withing a score at 20-14 with 7:20 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bears answered in quick fashion on a 51-yard touchdown pass to Baker extending the lead to 27-14. Baker finished with eight catches for 182 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Fairfield cut the lead back to a touchdown and went to the big play offense. It took only one play on a pass to Camron Daniels. Daniels broke a tackle at the 23-yard line and raced to the endzone for the score, cutting the lead to 27-21.

Graduates of FHS Cheer Camp took to the field on Friday, September 1, 2023 to cheer on the Fairfield Eagles Varsity team.

The Eagle defense, behind tackles behind the line of scrimmage by Darion Weatherall, Collin Glass and Chavers kept Fairfield in the position to pull ahead. Midway through the fourth quarter, Glass reached into the arms of Antrone Campbell and took the ball away and returned it to the Brownsboro 40. The running of Chavers and Cockerell put the Eagles inside the five-yard line and Chavers scored on a one-yard run. The extra point was no good and the score was tied with 4:11 remaining in the game.

Former FHS Head Football Coach and Principal Von. D. Wade was recognized during halftime for his 500th football game and “ongoing commitment and dedication to Fairfield ISD.” Presenting the plaque is FHS Principal Sonya Gibson.

Brownsboro went back on offense and Thompson passed to Baker for a couple of first downs, the second ending at the one. Thompson pushed his way in for the score in the final minute to put the Bears ahead 34-27.

Fairfield reached midfield before the Bears defense picked off the pass to preserve the win.

The Fairfield Eagles will travel to Madisonville to battle the Mustangs on Friday night and they will host the Robinson Rockets in the final tune-up before beginning district play.
