For the second year, an Active Shooter Training was conducted Saturday, July 9, 2022 at Wortham High School under the direction of Wortham Fire Department and Wortham Police Department.

“Our hope is that the training is never needed, but at least we are better prepared in the event of a disaster such as this,” reads a statement from Wortham Fire Department.

The interactive training was put on with the assistance for Wortham ISD faculty members.

“It was a great, eye-opening event,” said photographer Jennifer Lansford.

Participating also included Volunteer Fire Departments from Teague, Streetman and Fairfield, Fairfield EMS, Freestone County Office of Emergency Management, and Freestone County Sheriff’s Office.

“It’s been a summer of preparation and planning for school districts around our county,” said County Sheriff Jeremy Shipley. “I think our communities should be pleases with the attention and actions being taken by our school districts regrading the safety and security of all our school campuses.

According to Sheriff Shipley, he has been involved in three meetings and several conversations with school and state representatives, with more to follow in the coming weeks.

“I find comfort in knowing so many are working together in our communities to try and provide the safety that is required for our youth in this day and age,” he said.
