The Jonathan Hardin Chapter of the DAR met on February 8 at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas. The winners of the DAR Good Citizen awards from the local high schools in Freestone and Limestone Counties, along with their parents and some of their teachers and administrators, attended the meeting and were there to see their students receive their awards.

The winners of the DAR Good Citizen awards are:

Karyme Lozano, Coolidge High School;

Eli Martin, Fairfield High School;

Marlee Price, Groesbeck High School;

Miriam Diaz, Teague High School;

and Preston Batts, Wortham High School.

After the award presentations, Judy Taylor – Co-Chair, The Flag of the United States of America committee, gave a brief presentation on flag history dressed in patriotic colors.

Next, member Gale Miller gave a poignant and interesting talk entitled “GI Joe and Lillie’s Love Story” about a real couple who met and married during WWII.

The Wreaths Across America wreath frames were recycled – the Fairfield High School horticulture and floral classes used them to make new wreaths! Also, our chapter will be voting on two additional cemeteries (one in Freestone County and one in Limestone County) at the March 8 meeting that the chapter will be laying wreaths on veterans’ graves in addition to Driver and LaSalle Cemeteries.

In addition, information regarding the Texas DAR State Conference in Dallas in March was discussed.
